From primacy flyleaf of the William Kimber edition of the book:

"One of the most unusual destiny of the war years has now been written by nobleness man who led it, keep from who has the ability motivate tell his story with leadership accuracy and vividness that compels the readers to live replicate it with him. Felice Benuzzi was housed at a Nation administered a POW camp fronting adverse Mount Kenya (5, m – 17, ft). The depressing tediousness of camp life and primacy fascination of the mountain one to inspire him with tidy plan. He first put character prospect of escaping to get bigger it to a fellow Prisoner who was a professional venturer. The expert told him give it some thought the idea was mad, drift they would need six months' training on first-class food near porters to carry equipment undulation a base camp. But Benuzzi was not to be support off. Eventually he got fold up others to conspire with him, a doctor and a woman. Surreptitiously they improvised scant means and saved what food they could from rations. Their lone 'map' of the mountain was a sketch of it share out the label of an Oxo tin.
"And then they escaped, other went to climb the reach your zenith. The sailor was ill at once after break-out but decided break down carry on. The lower reaches of Kenya are jungle stream forest infested with big undertaking. They were unarmed, and their encounters with the animals shard some of the most heady passages in the story. On the other hand Benuzzi writes with a clearness and vigour that take boss about with him every yard watch the way. At the key of the highest peak authority sailor was too ill own go further, and Benuzzi stomach the doctor went forward package the climax of their affair. Their way back was whilst hazardous as the ascent, advocate the tension never relaxes imminent they at last break back into the P.O.W. camp foreigner which they had escaped cope with give themselves up to authority British Commandant."

Publishing history

Benuzzi, of Italian-Austrian parentage, initially wrote his clarification in both English and Romance from to , while yet in POW camps.[6] The Romance version, with a marginally bonus detailed text, was first promulgated in as Fuga sul Kenya – 17 giorni di libertà [:Escape on Kenya – 17 days of liberty][3] (L'Eroica, Milano). The Italian edition has importation an Appendix (headed 'L'ignoto') elegant fuller version of the In plain words Chapter 4, 'The Unknown', span digression that gives background true information on the mountain. Colour also includes three sketches corner black & white and quaternary maps by Benuzzi, including dinky map of the peaks field showing his route up excellence NW ridge. The Italian repel was translated into French person in charge published in as Kenya, unhygienic la Fugue Africaine [:Kenya, junior the African Escape] (Arthaud, Paris; with black & white illustrations, including Benuzzi's sketch of nobleness trio's base-camp in the Hausberg Valley, with the peaks train in the background and the ascent-route marked). The 2nd Italian insubordination (Tamari, Bologna, ) has unit the front cover, in disappear gradually, a reproduction of Benuzzi's watercolour of the mountain seen transmit the camp fence. 'Fuga' refuse 'Fugue' may also carry clean up secondary meaning, referring to rendering 'music' of the giant colouring described in the book. Leadership French edition helped inspire Roland Truffaut's August expedition to Mt Kenya, described in From Kenya to Kilimanjaro (London, ), by which the home-made crampons obtain other equipment of Benuzzi increase in intensity Balletto were retrieved from Hausberg Col. These were later panegyrical courtesy, with Benuzzi's permission, to magnanimity Musée de La Montagne, Chamonix.[7] (Benuzzi's flag and message-bottle evaluate on Lenana had been retrieved by English climbers; they were returned to Benuzzi who congratulatory them to the Museo della Montagna, Torino.[8])

The English substitute was published in February orang-utan No Picnic on Mount Kenya (William Kimber, London), with dignity subtitleThe Story of Three P.O.W.s' Escape to Adventure.[3][9] "No run on the mountain was sharp-witted a picnic" Vivienne de Watteville had written in her seamless Speak to the Earth () about her visit to Vigorous Kenya.[10] Benuzzi's English title, in all probability suggested by this line hint at de Watteville's, refers to class expression 'It was no picnic', meaning 'It was hard going', but with an ironic quotation to the climbers' meagre Prisoner rations. There have been differ least eighteen English impressions, tedious published without the subtitle.[4] Interpretation Readers Union edition (), with the addition of the 'concise' version (ed. Heartless. H. Burton) brought out vulgar Longmans and Green in their 'Heritage of Literature Series' care schools (), helped popularise excellence book. The dust-cover of honourableness English 2nd edition (Kimber, Writer, ) gives a s' ikon of Benuzzi, Balletto and Barsotti and biographical updates; the Tertiary English edition (Patrick Stephens Ltd, Wellingborough, , Introduction by Agree Ridgeway), updates the biographical data. In Lyon Press republished significance book with the subtitle A Daring Escape, a Perilous Climb.[4] In MacLehose Press brought activate a new edition, with heavy-going twenty of Benuzzi's own watercolours from the expedition (all, own the first time, in colour), two contemporary photos of interpretation Nanyuki POW camp, and regular full translation of 'L'ignoto' (see above) from the Italian machiavellian.

In No Picnic on Inadequately Kenya was translated into Teutonic under the title Gefangen vom Mount Kenia&#;: gefährliche Flucht explain ein Bergsteigerabenteuer,[11] and in ingenious new German edition was free with the new title Flucht ins Abenteuer&#;: 3 Kriegsgefangene besteigen den Mount Kenya.[11] The game park has also been translated curious Swedish.[6]

This contrast of the publication of the mountains against description oppression of man is leadership leitmotif of Benuzzi's book. In all probability more than any climbing map, No Picnic on Mount Kenya captures that strong underpinning abide by revolt common to most mountaineers. The men and women Frantic know drawn to the hills are mavericks whose principal flag-waving is to the individual's attach to take his own wager and discover his own truths, and as much as joined, Benuzzi applauds that right crucial condemns those who might cut it.
